Sewing project #8

I am behind posting this since it's been completed for exactly a month now. I knew a blog would be a bad idea for me...

Some of you might have seen this out on the great Book of Faces. Bought this fancy piece at the Salvation for $1. $1 for 100% silk and that's no lie. I still put it through the wash, mom I know you are cringing but let's be honest, dry cleaning would cost more than the dress is worth.  It only took me a million tries to complete. I started this dress in April and it gave me a really hard time.
The atrocity before alterations

Since this piece was a few sizes too big (by12 sizes) I decided the best mode of action would be to take the whole thing apart. I used my upgraded handy dandy ripper that my sister got me (thanks tine!) and went to work. I took out the shoulder pads, ripped off the sleeves and took apart the skirt and bodice.
So many pieces! Throw out the sleeves!

Next, I wanted to make the dress more open so I cut and pinned the V-neck I was looking for.
Pinning them back together!

I reconnected the bodice to the skirt after cutting off a few inches from the bottom because I wanted to shorten the torso and took it in on the sides a few inches.

Once I had reconnected the skirt and bodice I cut off the long skirt to make it more of a mini and decided it was still missing something. So I scrunched the material at my collarbone and hand sewed it together.

This piece was paired with my gray Steve Madden flats (more cute the comfy) and debuted at the new Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids with my good friends CA & CL! Caught a Chance Jones show and had a really great time checking out all the hipsters that Grand Rapids has to offer.
